Local Retreats in Sonoma County: Forestville, California

Join us for a Taste of Sicily

May 17, 2014

SicilyIn May, Spring is at its most bountiful in Sicily. Wildflowers carpet the slopes, caper flowers are in bloom, wild herbs can be picked near the base of ruins, and the fish markets are overflowing. The myth of Persephone is more alive than ever, for this is the time she's said to reurn.

For centuries, Spring has been celebrated on the island with food and festivals. In that spirit we’ll feast also and toast the season of renewal and new life. All of our retreats have the same format: we write all morning, take several short breaks, and one longer break at lunchtime. We'll start the morning with a brunch bite and have a hearty lunch. Later we'll have a seasonal DeLorenzo dessert, and we'll end the day with snacks and an evening toast. Join us for Sicilian pasta with capers, green olives and tuna, a wild herb salad with asparagus and fennel, and a special bruschetta for the evening toast. And what Sicilian feast would be complete without cannoli?

Since 2009, Sharon Smith and I have collaborated on local writing retreats at her home in Forestville, California. Sharon and her husband David call this place Birdland, because of the wonderful variety of birds on their property. This beautiful spot is serene, spacious and comfortable: perfect for a writing retreat.

The property has two structures: a comfortable log cabin with a gourmet kitchen, and a modern studio with plenty of chairs and pillows, a wood burning stove, and lots of natural light. We write in the studio.

The Forestville Retreats are offered on a sliding scale of $175-$225. We encourage you to pay what you can afford to pay. The fee for the retreat includes the all-day workshop, as well as the morning treat, snacks, lunch, dessert, and all beverages. The price for the retreat does not include accommodations, but if you decide to come, Sharon will help you with accommodations, and other food-related excursions while you are here, such as wine tasting.

These retreats tend to fill fast, and many participants return to write with us again, so if you are interested, please make a non-refundable $75 deposit to hold your place. You may do this by arranging to send Chris a check; you can also sign up on the "Fees and Deposits" page, using the Paypal drop-down menu. The balance is due on the day of the retreat.
