Writing Retreat on San Juan Island
SEPTEMBER 14-20, 2027
Join me, Christopher P. DeLorenzo, for a week-long writing retreat in the quiet town of Friday Harbor, on San Juan Island, Washington.
What You’ll Experience:
You’ll begin every morning with a personalized breakfast (served right to your room)
Daily three-hour writing workshops
Plenty of free time during the afternoon to read, nap, work on your writing, or take some time to walk into town.
A short, easy walk to Friday Harbor offers wonderfully eclectic businesses and a great bookstore, shopping, and locally made ice cream
Optional afternoon group adventures to the local winery, Roche Harbor’s sculpture garden, and sightseeing trips to local beaches and lighthouses.
Deep, easeful community connection with shared meals and conversations
Intuitively designed workshops for reflection, growth, and creativity
This Is For You If:
You move fast in your everyday life and crave a slower, more intentional rhythm (think: mornings that begin with coffee and nowhere to rush off to)
You’re drawn to beauty, nature, and experiences that feel both grounding and expansive
You’re curious about personal growth and love weaving together practices like movement, ritual, creativity, and rest
You want to reconnect with joy; not the big, performative kind, but the quiet, playful kind that sneaks in when you finally exhale
You value meaningful connection and want to share space with other thoughtful, heart-led people

I began leading destination retreats in 2009, driven by my joint desires to write with and to travel with others. I’ve always loved sharing traveling experiences, so when a group of my weekly participants encouraged me to lead them on a trip, I decided to give it a try. Since that first writing retreat in the south of France, I’ve taken people to Italy, Mexico, and Hawaii.
In my weekly groups, I encourage everyone to explore whatever topics they need to, and to process complicated emotions and experiences, which are often the spark for great stories, essays and poems. I closely adhere to the guidelines, and always maintain a safe container. I felt this group dynamic of trust and confidentiality would only deepen if we wrote together for several days in a row: I was right.
While we’re away together, I help usher in and nurture new ideas, and guide you in a daily writing routine, whether you’re just beginning a new project, developing one that’s more established, or needing to process life goals and changes through the written word. And in addition to the workshops, I offer an optional one on one consulting session, giving you a detailed response to your work.
On theses retreats, I’m a writing teacher as well as a travel guide. Hosting comes naturally to me, and I’ve discovered how much I enjoy creating an elite travel experience for others, from curating beautiful spaces, collaborating with gourmet caterers, to leading fun, personalized tours. And I keep these retreats small (8-10 people), which offers a more intimate, connected experience, sharing meals around one table, as well as going on outings that support local businesses.
What I’ve learned to do well on retreats is facilitate your growth as a writer, while also giving you the experience of a well-planned vacation, with plenty of down time in a beautiful, restful place. And Friday Harbor, on San Juan Island, turns out to be the perfect destination for this.
THE DETAILS
LOCATION
San Juan is located off the coast of Washington state, only three hours from Seattle, but it feels like another world. Known for its abundant wildlife, protected waters, and fresh, locally produced food, this 55-square-mile island is a world of its own. Because it is part of the San Juan Islands archipelago, the weather here is milder than in Seattle and generally less rainy. I’ve visited several times now in order to find the best lodging, shopping, and eating locales, and I find it to be the perfect place for a writing retreat.
